How to Improve Your Immune System

Written By James J. Hether, D.C. on December 4, 2020

Boost Immune SystemThe immune system defends your body from disease-causing microorganisms such as viruses, germs, and bacteria.

If you have a weak immune system, your body becomes more susceptible to common illnesses such as colds and flu, and other infectious diseases.

5 Tips to Boost Your Immune System

There is no single approach to improving your immune system. Sometimes, it involves lifestyle changes that require a shift to healthy-living choices.

Follow these guidelines to keep your body and immune system strong and healthy:

1. Get Adequate Sleep

Stress and lack of sleep have the same negative impact on the immune system. Without enough sleep, the body cannot produce white blood cells, which are essential immune system components.

Children and infants need between eight and 17 hours of sleep, depending on their age, while adults should get at least seven hours of sleep every day.

2. Eat a healthy diet

Malnourished individuals are prone to contracting infectious diseases compared to persons who eat healthily. Micronutrient deficiencies also weaken the immune system.

Eat a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. You can also take multivitamins and supplements for a healthy boost of your immune system.

3. Practice Good Hygiene

Wash your hands frequently and properly using soap and water. Handwashing reduces infectious diarrhea cases by 58 percent.

4. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise promotes good circulation for a healthy immune system. With physical activity, immune system cells and substances move freely in the body to efficiently perform their functions.

Exercise also protects the body from diseases, helps control body weight, lowers blood pressure, and improves cardiovascular health.

5. Live Stress-Free

Individuals experiencing excessive stress are more likely to get sick. Manage and reduce your stress by:

  • Connecting with relatives and friends for emotional support
  • Trying a new hobby
  • Doing meditation and yoga
  • Getting a massage
